Area of Expertise:

Dr. Richard Dewey is the Associate Director for Science Services with Ocean Networks Canada and an Adjunct Professor in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Victoria. He holds a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Victoria and a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of British Columbia. His research interests are coastal and ocean flows, mixing processes, turbulence, waves, and tides. Richard has conducted research throughout the Pacific from Japan to California, and along the B.C., Alaskan, and Arctic coastal margins.

As the Associate Director for Science Services, Richard provides guidance to the science and research programs enabled by the observatory systems operated by Ocean Networks Canada. He co-authored the original VENUS proposal in 2001, and has been an integral architect in the design, installation, and continuous operation of the ocean observing systems. Richard supervises the ONC Staff Scientists, and together they manage the scientific collaborations with ONC’s research partners.

Richard has used a variety of profilers and ROVs, and deployed more than 150 moorings on over 100 oceanographic expeditions. He is author of the Mooring Design and Dynamics MATLAB package, and specializes in time series analysis.
